Used Books

Looking for a place to bring your used books? We offer store credit for used books. We admit we are selective with what we accept. We want to ensure the best selections for patrons. Please keep the following guidelines in mind when selecting books to sell to us.

What we prefer:

  • Recent fiction and non-fiction in paperback (hardcover books take up more space)

  • Indiana history and Indiana authors

  • Classics, especially in trade size or nice/unusual hardcover

  • Young adult, middle reader and nice picture books, the more recent the better

What we do not accept:

  • Encyclopedias and textbooks

  • Things that are dated (travel guides, Guinness World Records, political science, cookbooks, diet/health books, sciences, computer manuals, etc.)

  • Due to space-most hardcover fiction after it’s released in paperback. (There are some exceptions.)

  • Most coffee table books

  • Old library books

  • Mass Market books (glossy front cover with thin pages darker in color)

  • Due to space limitations, we may have to turn down good quality books. Your books will always be checked against our current inventory. Internal guidelines dictate how many copies of each book we will keep on hand at any given time.

Some Notes on Condition:

All books must be clean and unmarked with no cracking or bending of the spine. Hardcovers need dust jackets. Books must not be water-damaged or smell. Mold, spiders, bugs, pet hair, and dirt are unacceptable. We will not evaluate books that could pose a hazard to the health of our staff or the quality of our inventory.

Exceptions on Buying Days

Due to the volume of patrons in the store, we cannot accommodate used book buying on Saturdays and Sundays.

Store Credit

Please call ahead or email to make sure there is a buyer available before bringing in books. If no buyer is available when you bring in books, we cannot process books for store credit.

In general, we price used books at half the cost of the list price on the book and give credit that is 15% of the list price. Example: If a book is $20, we would sell in store for $10 and give credit of $3.50 for the title. To give perspective, other chain used book buyers might give you $1-2 for the same title. Some exceptions on price may be made.

We exchange all sales with store credit.

Your store credit has no expiration date.

Credit cannot be cashed out.

Credit may be used to pay for half of a purchase. This is necessary to maintain cash flow for store operation and survival.

Donations

We do accept donations.

Due to space limitations, we will donate any books we do not feel we can sell or do not have space to accommodate to the Indianapolis Library Services Center which helps fund the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
